Causes :
The exact cause of atopic dermatitis Is not known, but common causes are genetic, environmental, and immunological. Person with a family history of atopic conditions such as eczema, asthma, or allergic rhinitis are more likely to develop atopic dermatitis. Additionally, certain environmental triggers such as allergens, irritants, harsh chemicals, and changes in weather or humidity levels can exacerbate symptoms.
Symptoms:
Pruritus (itching): Itching is a hallmark feature of atopic dermatitis and can be severe, leading to scratching and exacerbation of skin lesions.
Erythema (redness) and edema (swelling): Affected areas of the skin appear red, inflamed, and may exhibit swelling due to underlying inflammation.
Excoriation (scratching): Chronic scratching and rubbing of the skin can lead to excoriation, erosions, and crusting of the affected areas.
Lichenification: Prolonged inflammation and scratching can cause thickening and hardening of the skin, known as lichenification.
Xerosis (dryness): Atopic skin tends to be dry and prone to irritation, with a tendency to develop fissures and cracks.
Distribution: Atopic dermatitis commonly affects flexural areas of the body, such as the elbows, knees, neck, and wrists, but can also involve other areas, including the face, scalp, and trunk.
Diagnosis:
Diagnosing atopic dermatitis is primarily based on clinical evaluation, including the patient’s medical history and physical examination findings. There are no specific diagnostic tests for atopic dermatitis, but certain features may support the diagnosis, such as the presence of typical skin lesions, a personal or family history of atopic diseases (eczema, asthma, allergic rhinitis), and onset in infancy or childhood. In some cases, additional tests, such as skin patch testing or blood tests to assess for allergies or immune system dysfunction, may be performed to rule out other potential causes of skin inflammation.
Management
Moisturize regularly: Keeping the skin well-hydrated is essential for managing atopic dermatitis.
Avoid triggers: Identify and avoid triggers that exacerbate your symptoms, such as certain fabrics, harsh soaps or detergents, and environmental allergens.
