Causes of Warts::
Warts are caused by various strains of HPV, a highly contagious virus that can be transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact or indirectly through contact with contaminated surfaces. HPV grows in warm, moist environments, making places like swimming pools, locker rooms, and communal showers common breeding grounds for the virus. Persons with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to developing warts.
Types of Warts:
Warts come in several different varieties, each with its own distinct characteristics. The most common types include:
- 1. Common Warts (Verruca vulgaris): These warts typically appear on the hands, fingers, or around the nails. They are rough to the touch and may have a cauliflower-like appearance.
- Plantar Warts: Plantar warts develop on the soles of the feet, where the pressure from walking and standing can push them into the skin, causing pain or discomfort. They often have a rough, grainy texture and may appear flattened due to the pressure.
- Flat Warts (Verruca plana): These warts are smoother and flatter than other types and tend to appear in larger numbers, often on the face, neck, hands, or knees. They may be pink, brown, or yellowish in color.
- 4. Filiform Warts: Filiform warts have a distinctive appearance, resembling long, narrow projections that often develop on the face, particularly around the eyes, mouth, or nose.
- 5. Genital Warts: Genital warts are a sexually transmitted infection caused by certain strains of HPV. They can appear on the genitals, groin, or anal area and may be flesh-colored, pink, or reddish in color.
PREVENTION:
Precautions can help reduce the risk of contracting the virus. These include:
- Avoiding direct contact with warts on other people or contaminated surfaces.
- Keeping skin clean and dry, especially in communal areas like swimming pools or locker rooms.
- Avoiding walking barefoot in public places, particularly where the virus may thrive.
- Refraining from picking or scratching at existing warts to prevent spreading the virus to other areas of the body.
